MIKE SONG | Head Coach

Coach Mike Song is the head coach of Westside High School (‘18 THSLL Coach of the Year) and director and head coach of Nation United-Texas. Since his coming to Westside in 2018, Coach Song has converted the program, quadrupling its season wins over two years, matriculating two NCAA players, coaching 4 THSLL All-Stars, and earning a district playoff appearance in his first season. 

Coach Song has played lacrosse since his childhood in Virginia, and he has coached the sport for over a decade to youth through varsity high school and college players.

Prior to Westside, Coach Song served as Director of Boys and Girls Lacrosse/Boys Head Coach from 2014-2018 at Long Beach Polytechnic HS, named one of the top ten sports schools in the country according to ESPN. At Poly, Coach Song launched the program and graduated it from a club to a CIF school sport, earning an overall coaching record of 43-25 (.632), including a startup season of 7-6 with all first-time players. At Poly, Coach Song earned his players over a dozen scholarship offers in the four-year program history, and he also developed Long Beach Youth Lacrosse, a youth and feeder program offering lacrosse to minorities and lower income families.

Prior to LB Poly, Coach Song served as Varsity Assistant and JV Head at Mira Costa HS in Manhattan Beach, CA, where he led the team to an 11-1 record.

As a player, Michael was a midfielder for the Korea National Team in the 2002 World Lacrosse Championships, starting all games including Sweden, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Wales, and Ireland. In college, Michael attended Lehigh University, playing for the men’s lacrosse club and earning NCLL All-Star accolades, as well as competing in the NCLL national championship tournament two times, reaching both semi-finals and quarter-finals in ’97 and ’01 respectively.

PAUL GREGORY | Defensive Coordinator

Coach Paul serves as Westside’s Defensive Coordinator, and he comes with a worldly background. Playing defense in high school at Florida Wesley Chapel HS and graduating in 2016, Coach Paul continued to play in his travels in Edmund St. Bury, England, Germany, and Okinawa, Japan.

Coach Paul is currently in the School for Criminal Justice at the University of Houston-Downtown, and he is an infantry reserve and lance corporal (LCPL) for the U.S. Marines.

BOB MACKENZIE | Assistant Coach

Bob Mackenzie has served as Westside’s head coach from 2008-2014, and then as assistant coach from 2015 to present. Coach Mackenzie comes from Bethany College (Bethany, WV) where he earned a BA in Mass Communications (’77) and also played four years at Defense, Midfield, and Attack, winning a Southwest Lacrosse Association championship in ’83 and earning an All-Star accolade.

Coach Mackenzie’s son, Tyler, played lacrosse at Westside HS, and his daughter, Jordan, cheered at WHS. Coach Mackenzie currently plays ice hickey in different leagues in Houston.

 

SAL MANEEN | Assistant Coach, Goalie Coordinator

Sal Maneen comes from Houston and earned a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism from Syracuse University, where he tended goal for the club team in the Upstate Outdoor Lacrosse League.

Prior to college, Coach Sal played high school lacrosse at Strake Jesuit. Professionally, Sal has Spent more than a decade covering NCAA, pro, and High School lacrosse for ESPN, Inside Lacrosse, and Lax.com. He called the World Indoor Lax Championships for ESPN Radio, and he has covered multiple men’s and women’s Final Four Weekend’s.

Coach Sal brings a wealth of knowledge to the team and specifically at the goalie position, as he starts his second year at Westside coaching.
